Japantown, San Jose: photographic study

When I moved to San Jose's Japantown last fall, I quickly recognized that this neighborhood is in the middle of a transformation: with little affordable housing in Silicon Valley, new people and businesses are moving into this area and things are changing, quickly. I want to capture this transition.

In January 2015, I began to explore the city by foot and by bike, looking for scenes that highlight the juxtaposition of old and new, industrial and residential, wealth and poverty, technology and craftsmanship. Though my images tell stories of tension, they are composed of bright colors and textures, reflective of this neighborhood’s spirit.
